Anlässlich des 250. Jahrestages der Unabhängigkeitserklärung der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika lud Howard Solomon, Chargé d’Affaires a. i. der USA bei den Internationalen Organisationen in Wien, zu einer Gartenparty in die Residenz des multilateralen amerikanischen Botschafters in Wien ein.
Die Feier zum U.S. Independence Day stand in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto „250 Years of American Spirit: On and Off the Field“ – „250 Jahre amerikanischer Geist: Auf und neben dem Spielfeld“ – und fand am Mittwoch, dem 24. Juni, in Anwesenheit zahlreicher Mitglieder des diplomatischen Korps sowie weiterer geladener Gäste statt.
Dresscode im Zeichen der FIFA Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2026
Passend zum Motto war auch der Dresscode sportlich und international geprägt. Neben sommerlich-legerer Kleidung waren die Gäste ausdrücklich eingeladen, im Trikot ihrer Lieblingsmannschaft zu erscheinen. Schließlich werden die Vereinigten Staaten im Jahr 2026 gemeinsam mit Kanada und Mexiko die FIFA Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft ausrichten.
Viele Gäste folgten dieser Einladung und kamen in den Nationaltrikots ihrer Länder oder in den Farben ihrer bevorzugten Teams. So entstand ein lebendiges, farbenfrohes Bild internationaler Vielfalt: Trikots aus unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt, diplomatische Begegnungen in gelöster Atmosphäre und ein gemeinsames Bekenntnis zur verbindenden Kraft des Sports prägten den Abend.

Abschied von Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon
Der diesjährige Empfang stand jedoch nicht nur im Zeichen des Sports und der bevorstehenden Weltmeisterschaft, sondern war zugleich auch ein persönlicher Abschied von Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon.
Solomon ist Karrierebeamter des United States Foreign Service im Rang eines Minister-Counselor. In Wien war er als interimistischer Chargé d’Affaires der US-Mission bei den Internationalen Organisationen tätig. Zuvor bekleidete er unter anderem die Funktion des stellvertretenden Missionsleiters der US-Mission bei den Internationalen Organisationen in Wien, war Direktor des Büros für westeuropäische Angelegenheiten sowie amtierender stellvertretender Assistant Secretary für Westeuropa und die Europäische Union.
Nach einer erfolgreichen diplomatischen Laufbahn von 29 Jahren im Dienst des U.S. Department of State, in deren Verlauf er auf verschiedenen verantwortungsvollen Positionen tätig war, wird Howard Solomon Wien bereits in diesem Sommer verlassen und nach Michigan zurückkehren.

250th U.S. Independence Day Celebrated in the Spirit of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the Farewell to Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon
To mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, Howard Solomon, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the U.S. Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna, hosted a garden reception at the Residence of the U.S. Ambassador to the International Organizations in Vienna.
This year’s U.S. Independence Day celebration was held under the theme “250 Years of American Spirit: On and Off the Field” and took place on Wednesday, June 24, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, government officials, and numerous distinguished guests.
A Dress Code Inspired by the FIFA World Cup 2026
Reflecting the event’s theme, the dress code embraced both elegance and sport. In addition to summer casual attire, guests were encouraged to wear the jersey of their favorite national team, highlighting the fact that the United States, together with Canada and Mexico, will co-host the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Many accepted the invitation by arriving in their national team jerseys or the colors of their favorite football clubs. The result was a vibrant display of international diversity, with jerseys from around the world adding a colorful dimension to an evening dedicated to diplomacy, friendship, and the unifying power of sport.
The relaxed atmosphere perfectly illustrated how sport continues to transcend borders, bringing people of different cultures and backgrounds together through shared enthusiasm and mutual respect.

A Farewell to Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon
Beyond celebrating America’s milestone anniversary and the excitement surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup, this year’s reception also marked a heartfelt farewell to Howard Solomon, who will conclude his diplomatic assignment in Vienna this summer.
A career member of the United States Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, Solomon has served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the U.S. Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna. During his distinguished diplomatic career, he also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission in Vienna, Director of the Office of Western European Affairs, and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Europe and the European Union.
After 29 years of dedicated service with the U.S. Department of State in a variety of senior diplomatic positions, Howard Solomon will leave Vienna and return to Michigan, bringing to a close an important chapter in his diplomatic career.
