More than 1,000 people, 40+ artists and over 400 participants will come together for a week of art, dialogue, cultural traditions and film
VIENNA, Austria – From 21 to 27 September 2026, Vienna will become a meeting place for cultures from around the world as the International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) presents the ninth edition of the Long Nights of Interculturality.
Under the theme “Belonging Across Borders,” the festival is expected to welcome more than 1,000 people and cultural and artistic perspectives connected to approximately 40 countries. Highlights include an International Day of Peace panel, an exhibition featuring more than 40 artists, a participatory community art project and Costumes of the World at Vienna City Hall.
“Vienna is home to people with roots all over the world, but living side by side does not automatically mean meeting one another,” said Josipa Palac, President of ICDO. “Long Nights creates spaces where people can share their stories, traditions and experiences, meet across cultural boundaries and develop a stronger sense of belonging to the city we share.”
Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding
The festival opens on 21 September at 6:00 p.m., the International Day of Peace, with “Belonging Across Borders: Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding Panel” at the Azerbaijani Cultural Centre.
The panel brings together H.E. Manizha Bakhtari, Ambassador of Afghanistan to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna; Dr. Anthony Löwstedt, Professor and Head of Media Communications at Webster Vienna Private University; and Dr. Melita H. Šunjić, former senior spokesperson and communication expert at UNHCR. International relations and disarmament specialist Eleonora Neri will moderate a discussion on how culture, identity, heritage and dialogue can strengthen social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

More Than 40 Artists Explore Belonging
On 23 September at 6:00 p.m., the Yunus Emre Institute Art Gallery will open “Belonging Across Borders: Art as a Bridge for Memory and Reconciliation.” More than 40 emerging and established artists will explore migration, displacement, memory, heritage and identity, including artists from Côte d’Ivoire for the first time.
The exhibition is organized with the support of Art Advisor Norlito Meimban and Exhibition Coordinator Alina Cárdenas of AC Art & Culture, who is travelling from the Philippines to Vienna to support the exhibition’s artistic presentation.
A special component, “BELONGING – We Are Part of Everything,” is hosted by ICDO Sofía Andretta Juárez, Sonia Siblik and Marco Grajeda . Around 40 transformed photographic portraits of people aged 6 to 72—including participants connected to the Christine Nöstlinger Middle School and the Ute Bock community—will create a collective portrait of migration, identity and belonging in contemporary Vienna. The exhibition continues until 20 October 2026.
More Than 400 Participants Take the Stage at Vienna City Hall
On 25 September at 6:00p.m., the festival’s largest celebration,“Costumes of the World,” will fill the Festsaal of Vienna City Hall with traditional clothing, music, dance, international cuisine and cultural expression.
More than 400 participants with roots across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America are expected to take part. The evening will showcase an extraordinary collection of handcrafted traditional costumes representing cultures from more than 35 countries, with each piece reflecting generations of heritage, artistry and cultural identity.
Visitors will also be able to explore 18 international food and cultural booths, offering flavours, traditions and cultural experiences from communities around the world. Live music, dance and artistic performances will bring these traditions to the stage, while cultural showcases and interactive photo opportunities will invite guests to engage with the festival throughout the evening.
Opening remarks will be delivered by Prof. Mag. Dr. Hermann Mückler, cultural and social anthropologist at the University of Vienna and ICDO advisor; Mag. Josipa Palac, President of ICDO; and a representative of the City of Vienna. Internationally acclaimed actor Peter Cvirn will moderate the evening, guiding audiences through the histories and stories represented by the traditional costumes.
The festival continues online on 26 September at 3:00 p.m. with a programme of international documentaries and short films presented through the ICDO YouTube channel.

WIEN, Österreich — Vom 21. bis 27. September 2026 wird Wien erneut zu einem internationalen Treffpunkt der Kulturen: Die International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) präsentiert die neunte Ausgabe der Long Nights of Interculturality.
Unter dem diesjährigen Motto „Belonging Across Borders“ werden mehr als 1.000 Besucher sowie kulturelle und künstlerische Perspektiven mit Bezug zu rund 40 Ländern erwartet. Zu den Höhepunkten zählen eine Podiumsdiskussion anlässlich des Internationalen Friedenstages, eine Ausstellung mit mehr als 40 Künstler, ein partizipatives Community-Kunstprojekt sowie „Costumes of the World“ im Wiener Rathaus.
„Wien ist die Heimat von Menschen mit Wurzeln in der ganzen Welt. Doch nebeneinander zu leben bedeutet nicht automatisch, einander auch wirklich zu begegnen“, erklärt Josipa Palac, Präsidentin der ICDO. „Long Nights schafft Räume, in denen Menschen ihre Geschichten, Traditionen und Erfahrungen miteinander teilen, sich über kulturelle Grenzen hinweg begegnen und ein stärkeres Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit zu jener Stadt entwickeln können, die wir gemeinsam unser Zuhause nennen.“
Kultur, Identität und Friedensförderung
Das Festival wird am 21. September um 18:00 Uhr, dem Internationalen Tag des Friedens, mit der Podiumsdiskussion „Belonging Across Borders: Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding“ im Aserbaidschanischen Kulturzentrum eröffnet.
An der Diskussion nehmen I.E. Manizha Bakhtari, Botschafterin Afghanistans in Österreich und Ständige Vertreterin bei den Vereinten Nationen in Wien, Dr. Anthony Löwstedt, Professor und Leiter des Bereichs Media Communications an der Webster Vienna Private University, sowie Dr. Melita H. Šunjić, ehemalige leitende Sprecherin und Kommunikationsexpertin des UNHCR, teil.
Moderiert wird das Gespräch von der Expertin für internationale Beziehungen und Abrüstung Eleonora Neri. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie Kultur, Identität, kulturelles Erbe und Dialog dazu beitragen können, den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt und ein friedliches Zusammenleben zu stärken.
Mehr als 40 Künstler setzen sich mit Zugehörigkeit auseinander
Am 23. September um 18:00 Uhr eröffnet in der Kunstgalerie des Yunus Emre Instituts die Ausstellung „Belonging Across Borders: Art as a Bridge for Memory and Reconciliation“.
Mehr als 40 aufstrebende und etablierte Künstler beschäftigen sich darin mit Themen wie Migration, Vertreibung, Erinnerung, kulturelles Erbe und Identität. Erstmals sind auch Künstler aus Côte d’Ivoire vertreten.
Die Ausstellung wird mit Unterstützung des Art Advisors Norlito Meimban sowie Alina Cárdenas von AC Art & Culture als Exhibition Coordinator organisiert. Für die Unterstützung der künstlerischen Präsentation reist sie eigens von den Philippinen nach Wien.

Rund 40 künstlerisch transformierte fotografische Porträts von Menschen im Alter zwischen 6 und 72 Jahren – darunter Teilnehmer mit Verbindung zur Christine-Nöstlinger-Mittelschule und zur Ute-Bock-Community – fügen sich zu einem kollektiven Porträt von Migration, Identität und Zugehörigkeit im heutigen Wien zusammen.
Die Ausstellung ist bis zum 20. Oktober 2026 zu sehen.
Mehr als 400 Mitwirkende auf der Bühne des Wiener Rathauses
Am 25. September um 18:00 Uhr findet mit „Costumes of the World“ der größte Festabend des Festivals statt. Der Festsaal des Wiener Rathauses wird dabei zu einer Bühne für traditionelle Kleidung, Musik, Tanz, internationale Kulinarik und kulturelle Vielfalt.
Mehr als 400 Mitwirkende mit Wurzeln in Europa, Asien, Afrika und Lateinamerika werden erwartet.
Der Abend präsentiert eine außergewöhnliche Sammlung handgefertigter traditioneller Kostüme aus Kulturen von mehr als 35 Ländern. Jedes einzelne Kleidungsstück erzählt von über Generationen weitergegebenem kulturellem Erbe, handwerklicher Kunst und Identität.
Darüber hinaus können Besucher 18 internationale Kulinarik- und Kulturstände entdecken, die Geschmäcker, Traditionen und kulturelle Erfahrungen verschiedener Communities aus aller Welt nach Wien bringen.
Live-Musik, Tanz und künstlerische Darbietungen bringen diese Traditionen auf die Bühne. Kulturelle Präsentationen und interaktive Fotomöglichkeiten laden die Gäste zugleich dazu ein, die Vielfalt des Festivals während des gesamten Abends unmittelbar zu erleben.
Die Eröffnungsworte sprechen Prof. Mag. Dr. Hermann Mückler, Kultur- und Sozialanthropologe an der Universität Wien und Berater der ICDO, Mag. Josipa Palac, Präsidentin der ICDO, sowie ein Vertreter der Stadt Wien.
Der international anerkannte Schauspieler Peter Cvirn moderiert den Abend und führt das Publikum durch die Geschichten, Traditionen und historischen Hintergründe der präsentierten Trachten und Kostüme.
Internationales Filmprogramm
Am 26. September um 15:00 Uhr wird das Festival online fortgesetzt. Über den YouTube-Kanal der ICDO wird ein Programm mit internationalen Dokumentar- und Kurzfilmen präsentiert.
