Die dritte Ausgabe des Kolumbien-Festivals brachte lateinamerikanisches Lebensgefühl in die österreichische Hauptstadt
Wien. Am Samstag, dem 18. Juli, luden I.E. Marcela Tovar Thomas, Botschafterin der Republik Kolumbien in Österreich, sowie die Botschaft und Ständige Vertretung Kolumbiens in Österreich zur dritten Ausgabe des Kolumbien-Festivals ein. Die Veranstaltung stand ganz im Zeichen der kolumbianischen Kultur, ihrer Vielfalt und des interkulturellen Austauschs und verwandelte die Yppengasse im 16. Wiener Gemeindebezirk in einen lebendigen Treffpunkt für Diplomatie, Diaspora und kulturinteressiertes Publikum.
Ein Nachmittag voller Musik, Tanz und kulinarischer Traditionen
Das Festival bot ein abwechslungsreiches Programm mit Live-Musik, traditionellen und zeitgenössischen Tanzaufführungen sowie authentischer kolumbianischer Gastronomie. Besucherinnen und Besucher erhielten einen facettenreichen Einblick in die kulturelle Identität Kolumbiens – von folkloristischen Darbietungen bis hin zu modernen musikalischen Interpretationen.
Nach der Begrüßung durch den Moderator richtete Botschafterin Marcela Tovar Thomas ihre Grußworte in spanischer Sprache an die anwesende kolumbianische Gemeinschaft sowie an die zahlreichen Gäste aus dem diplomatischen Corps und der österreichischen Öffentlichkeit. Sie würdigte die Bedeutung kultureller Begegnungen als Brücke zwischen den Nationen und als Ausdruck gelebter Freundschaft zwischen Kolumbien und Österreich.

„Latin Latas“: Musik aus recycelten Materialien
Den Auftakt des künstlerischen Programms gestaltete das außergewöhnliche Duo Latin Latas. Mit beeindruckender Kreativität verwandelten die beiden Künstler Alltagsgegenstände und recycelte Kunststoffmaterialien in Musikinstrumente und setzten damit zugleich ein starkes Zeichen für Nachhaltigkeit und Umweltbewusstsein.
Begleitend zum Auftritt wurde an einem Informationsstand Schmuck aus recyceltem Kunststoff angeboten, dessen Erlös einem gemeinnützigen Zweck zugutekam. Die Verbindung von Kunst, Musik und ökologischem Engagement verlieh dem Festival eine besondere gesellschaftliche Dimension.
Artist Zumbao brachte den Klang Kolumbiens nach Wien
Im Anschluss begeisterte die Formation Artist Zumbao das Publikum mit einem temperamentvollen Konzert, das moderne kolumbianische Rhythmen mit traditionellen Klängen verband. Die Musiker vermittelten eindrucksvoll die musikalische Vielfalt ihres Heimatlandes und sorgten für eine mitreißende Atmosphäre.
Besonderen Applaus erhielt auch die begleitende Tanzperformance: Eine Tänzerin präsentierte zunächst eine eindrucksvolle Darbietung mit Lasso, inspiriert von den Traditionen der kolumbianischen Llanos, bevor sie gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble einen traditionellen kolumbianischen Volkstanz aufführte, der das Publikum nachhaltig beeindruckte.
Ein Fest bis in die Nachtstunden
Bis in die späten Abendstunden wurde getanzt, gefeiert und musiziert. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des diplomatischen Corps, Mitglieder der kolumbianischen Diaspora sowie zahlreiche Wienerinnen und Wiener erlebten gemeinsam einen Abend, der weit über ein Kulturfestival hinausging.
Das Kolumbien-Festival hat sich damit als fester Bestandteil des Wiener Kulturkalenders etabliert. Es verbindet Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft, schafft Raum für Begegnung und macht die kulturelle Vielfalt Kolumbiens in Österreich auf eindrucksvolle Weise erlebbar.

COLOMBIA FESTIVAL IN VIENNA: A Celebration of Culture, Diversity, and Community
The third edition of the Colombia Festival brought the spirit of Latin America to the Austrian capital
Vienna. On Saturday, 18 July, H.E. Marcela Tovar Thomas, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to Austria, together with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Colombia to Austria, hosted the third edition of the Colombia Festival. Dedicated to celebrating Colombian culture, diversity, and intercultural dialogue, the event transformed Yppengasse in Vienna’s 16th district into a vibrant meeting place for diplomats, members of the Colombian diaspora, and the wider Austrian public.
An Afternoon of Music, Dance, and Colombian Traditions
The festival offered a rich and varied programme featuring live Colombian music, traditional and contemporary dance performances, and authentic Colombian cuisine. Visitors enjoyed a multifaceted introduction to Colombia’s cultural heritage, ranging from folkloric traditions to contemporary artistic expressions.
Following the opening remarks by the master of ceremonies, Ambassador Marcela Tovar Thomas addressed the Colombian community in Spanish and welcomed representatives of the diplomatic corps as well as Austrian guests. In her speech, she underscored the importance of cultural exchange as a bridge between nations and as a powerful expression of the friendship between Colombia and Austria.
Latin Latas: Sustainability Through Music
The artistic programme opened with the innovative duo Latin Latas, whose performance combined music with environmental awareness. Using instruments crafted entirely from recycled plastic and everyday discarded materials, the musicians demonstrated how creativity and sustainability can come together in a unique artistic expression.
Complementing their performance, a festival stand offered handcrafted jewellery made from recycled plastic, with proceeds supporting a charitable cause. The initiative added a meaningful social and environmental dimension to the event, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to sustainability.
Artist Zumbao Brings the Sound of Colombia to Vienna
The second part of the programme featured Artist Zumbao, whose energetic performance blended contemporary Colombian rhythms with traditional melodies from different regions of the country. Their music transported audiences to the heart of Colombia while showcasing the country’s rich and diverse musical heritage.
A highlight of the performance was an accompanying dance presentation inspired by the traditions of Colombia’s Llanos. A dancer captivated the audience with an impressive display of lasso techniques before joining the ensemble in a traditional Colombian folk dance that received enthusiastic applause.
A Celebration That Lasted Well Into the Evening
Music, dancing, and celebration continued late into the evening as members of the diplomatic community, the Colombian diaspora, and Austrian visitors came together in an atmosphere of openness and cultural exchange. The festival offered more than entertainment—it created a space where people from different backgrounds could connect through art, tradition, and shared experiences.
Now in its third edition, the Colombia Festival has established itself as a recurring highlight of Vienna’s multicultural calendar. By bringing Colombian traditions, music, gastronomy, and contemporary culture to Austrian audiences, the festival continues to strengthen the cultural ties between Colombia and Austria while celebrating the values of diversity, dialogue, and community.
