IN MEMORIAM: Die Botschafterin von El Salvador, Julia Villatoro, hat uns verlassen und eine tiefe Trauer im diplomatischen Korps in Österreich hinterlassen

Die traurige Nachricht, dass I.E. Julia Emma Villatoro Tario, Botschafterin von El Salvador in der Republik Österreich und Ständige Vertreterin bei der UNO sowie bei anderen internationalen Organisationen in Wien, von uns gegangen ist, hat das gesamte diplomatische Korps und alle, die diese liebenswerte, stets lächelnde, starke und engagierte Frau kannten, fassungslos zurückgelassen.

Diese Nachricht wurde am 30. Juli 2025 von der Außenministerin El Salvadors, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, bekannt gegeben.

“Villatoro Tario war eine Kämpferin, die ihr Leben dem diplomatischen Dienst gewidmet und ihre Pflichten mit Hingabe, Stärke und unerschütterlichem Engagement für El Salvador erfüllt hat”, betonte die Außenministerin Hill Tinoco.

“Ihre Rolle als Botschafterin in Österreich war von tiefer Liebe für das Land und einem Stolz geprägt, der jede ihrer Missionen leitete. Ruhe in Frieden, Kämpferin”, schrieb die Außenministerin Hill Tinoco auf X.

Auch Vizeministerin Adriana Mira äußerte sich anlässlich dieses traurigen Ereignisses: “Mit Dankbarkeit und tiefer Trauer verabschiede ich mich von einer großartigen Frau und Freundin. Sie war ein Vorbild für Leben, Glauben und aktive Diplomatie. Sie hinterlässt eine große Lücke in unseren Herzen.”

Mira sagte außerdem, dass “ihre Hingabe, Integrität und ihr Einsatz für die salvadorianische Diplomatie ein unschätzbares Erbe hinterlassen” und wandte sich an die Familie von Villatoro Tario, um ihre “Unterstützung in dieser Zeit der Trauer” auszudrücken.

Am 13. Jänner 2020 übergab Julia Villatoro ihre Beglaubigungsschreiben an Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen

Julia Emma Villatoro Tario übergab am 13. Jänner 2020 ihre Beglaubigungsschreiben an Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen und wurde zur Außerordentlichen und Bevollmächtigten Botschafterin von El Salvador in der Republik Österreich sowie zur Ständigen Vertreterin bei der UNO und anderen internationalen Organisationen in Wien ernannt. Außerdem war sie zugleich auch akkreditierte Botschafterin El Salvadors in Bulgarien, Kroatien, der Slowakei, Ungarn und Rumänien.

Bevor sie als Botschafterin in Wien diente, war Julia Villatoro Botschafterin und Missionsleiterin El Salvadors im Königreich Belgien und im Großherzogtum Luxemburg sowie bei der Europäischen Union in Brüssel (von November 2016 bis Oktober 2019).

Hommage an Julia Villatoro: “Ewiges Licht in Wien”

Am Donnerstag, dem 14. August, fand im Hauptquartier der Vereinten Nationen in Wien eine Gedenkfeier für Botschafterin Julia Villatoro statt, unter dem Vorsitz des Botschafters von Paraguay, S.E. Prof. Dr. Juan Francisco Facetti, der derzeitige Vorsitzende der Gruppe der lateinamerikanischen und karibischen Länder ist.

Das Ableben von Botschafterin Julia Villatoro ist ein schmerzlicher Verlust für die diplomatische Gemeinschaft, aber auch für uns alle, die diese großartige Frau gekannt haben. Diplomacy & Commerce Austria spricht ihrer Familie, ihren Freunden sowie ihren Kolleginnen und Kollegen unser aufrichtiges Beileid aus.

IN MEMORIAM: The Ambassador of El Salvador, Julia Villatoro, has left us and brought deep sorrow to the diplomatic corps in Austria

The sad news that H.E. Julia Emma Villatoro Tario, Ambassador of El Salvador to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, has passed away, has left the entire diplomatic corps, as well as all those who knew this kind, ever-smiling, strong, and dedicated woman, in shock.

This news was announced on July 30, 2025, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco.

“Villatoro Tario was a fighter who devoted her life to diplomatic service and fulfilled her duties with dedication, strength, and unwavering commitment to El Salvador” emphasized Foreign Minister Hill Tinoco.
“Her role as Ambassador to Austria was guided by a deep love for the country and a pride that shaped each of her missions. Rest in peace, warrior,” wrote Foreign Minister Hill Tinoco on X.

Deputy Minister Adriana Mira also spoke on this sad occasion: “With gratitude and deep sorrow, I bid farewell to a great woman and friend. She was a role model for life, faith, and active diplomacy. She leaves behind a great void in our hearts.”
Mira further stated that “her dedication, integrity, and commitment to Salvadoran diplomacy leave behind an invaluable legacy,” and addressed the family of Villatoro Tario to express her “support in this time of mourning.”

On January 13, 2020, Julia Emma Villatoro Tario presented her credentials to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and was appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of El Salvador to the Republic of Austria, as well as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. At the same time, she also served as the accredited Ambassador of El Salvador to Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.Before serving as Ambassador in Vienna, Julia Villatoro was Ambassador and Head of Mission of El Salvador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, as well as to the European Union in Brussels (from November 2016 to October 2019).

On Thursday, August 14, a memorial service for Ambassador Julia Villatoro was held at the United Nations Headquarters in Vienna, chaired by the Ambassador of Paraguay, H.E. Juan Francisco Facetti, who is also the current Chair of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries.

The passing of Ambassador Julia Villatoro is a painful loss for the diplomatic community, but also for all of us who had the honor of knowing this remarkable woman. Diplomacy & Commerce Austria extends its sincere condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
